Base London Football Beyond Borders

Base London was established in 1995 and as we turn 25 this year we’re celebrating our connection to a multicultural Britain through a series of portraits and stories showing real people and their dedication to their communities. In these strange times where public distancing and isolation is necessary, it’s vital to keep community strong and focus on positivity.

We Exist To Change The Lives Of Young People. There Are Thousands Of Young People Who Are Passionate About Football But Are Not Fulfilling Their Potential At School.

Football Beyond Borders (FBB) supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are passionate about football but disengaged at school in order to help them finish school with the skills and grades to make a successful transition into adulthood. They do this by providing long-term, intensive support, built around relationships and young people’s passions, in the classroom and beyond.

Remario FBB

Remario Joined Fbb In September 2019. He Has A Level 3 Diploma In Sports Science And Is Currently Doing A Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, With The Hope To Develop His Skills And Career In Youth Work.

I joined FBB because I felt it was a opportunity to put my skill sets and abilities to use and help the youth. I grew up seeing a lot of bad influences and role models influence other young people around me and I use that as drive to make me do better and push others around me to do better.

FBB gave me the platform and the best team I could have imagined to help me achieve this vision. Our job is so important because we give young people a voice. I am so proud of us as coaches and educators, we really go beyond for the young people. There are not many organisations like us out there that give young people the time and understanding that they need and deserve.”

Impact of COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak FBB have called on the world of football to support a national campaign to ensure the young people they coach are still receiving the help they need. Teaming up with household names such as Ian, Wright, Chris Smalling, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Leighanne Robe, FBB are delivering online learning sessions, practitioners Q&As and one to one therapy sessions with their at-risk cohort of students.

We want to ensure that the welfare of young people can be supported during this period.

It’s clear from the feedback from both parents and participants that young people need purposeful but fun tasks to occupy them during this lockdown. However, many of these young people have expressed barriers that are preventing them from maintaining educational activity during this time.

We know that during periods away from school there is a literacy and attainment lag with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Through the use of crowd funding FBB are launching a national campaign to raise funds for the National Emergency Trust  and ensure that young people can sustain educational activity within the home environment and maintain internet access and electronic communications during this period.

How You Can Help

FBB are crowdfunding to ensure they can:

  • Maintain educational activity and stimulus within the home environment.
  • Maintain internet access and provide electronic communication.

The funds provided will go towards the wider National Emergency Trust campaign to support young people who are the most affected.

In the coming months they will be working with their young people and their families to ensure they have the necessary WiFi access, data storage, electronic equipment and access to online learning to ensure they remain stimulated and connected during this period.
