Base London's Gentlemen's Guide to...

September

Work It Out... The Boss

Work it out the Boss

At the end of the day they sign the cheques that pay your bills; your boss is a difficult card to play. You don't want to appear as if you're too matey with your boss as it would alienate you from your co-workers and give you a brown nose reputation. Like wise you don't want to be too distant from them as you want to be noticed for when it counts. It's a complex situation but here's Base London's guide how to play... your boss.

Get The 'Knowledge'.

It's important to know your Boss and as much as you can about them. Try to get to know their family situation, current things occurring in their lives, what sports they like, what teams they support, where they go on holiday etc. Having all this knowledge is vital for awkward one on one moments like when you're in a lift. With this in your locker you can spark conversation with starters such as 'See the game last night? Thought the new kid looked a good player'...Smooth

Be Obliging

You're snowed under, there doesn't seem to be enough time left to hit your deadline, you haven't left the office for three days just trying to cope, then your phone rings, it's your boss. 'Can you make a brew?' You want to slam the phone down and tell them what special ingredients you're going to add, free of charge, but don't, simply say 'No problem, be straight on it'.

Be Boss Conscious

Always be aware of your boss's location. When they're nearby look busy, and avoid any embarrassing 'They're behind me aren't they?' type moments.
