Wear It Well... Shoes

You've landed the job, congratulations, however the hard work is not over yet. Your new workplace is going to be about as difficult as your interview. Hark back to the first day of school, you know no-one, you're not up on the latest gossip, in all honesty you'll probably be the subject of it. Your first day's going to be pretty daunting so here's Base London's guide to getting off on the right foot with your new work mates.

Dress for invisibility

Try and be as low key as possible on your first day as it's not advisable to intimidate the new crew. You should have a rough idea of what the dress code is but even if it's ultra casual try and be a bit smart.

Make sure you listen to EVERYTHING; what's being told to you and what's being mentioned around the office, make notes where possible and save your comments until later.

You're going to meet a lot of new faces, and will have to remember a lot of new names and responsibilities. Don't panic, you won't remember everyone immediately. Check out the Office Politics. Every office has in-house politics, who likes who, who doesn't. You'll soon pick this up from body language or conversations. Don't get involved.

Breaks

This is a good time to get to know people better, as well as what the local area has to offer for lunch.

Invitation for a Drink

It's quite common for employees to go for a quick after work pint, and they might invite you. It's best to go for one and one only, but have an excuse ready to leave. Be disciplined, one drink only.

Homework

After your first day, don't just kick back and relax, sit down, take out a pen and paper and try and list all the people you've met and what their responsibilities are. This will show you who you remember and who you need to spend a bit more time getting to know the next day.
