Wear It Well... The Suit

There's a time in every man's life when a suit is essential, whether it's for a wedding, the office or impressing a judge, it's important to know your suiting basics. A must have for any respectable guys' wardrobe, it is essential to get it right, after all, the suit is a British tradition, and a good quality whistle is what makes us Brits the envy of the world. So here's how to keep up with traditions and make your nation proud...

Get It Perfect

Sleeves - A suit jacket should end a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch before reaching your hand.

Buttons - Modern tailoring favours a one or two button option, a three button option can give a more elongated and modish appearance. Never do up more than one button, and that one should be the top of the two buttons and the middle of a three button. The sleeve buttons are generally non-functional and there for decoration.

Colour - Certain occasions call for a classic Black suit, however Navy, Charcoal and Brown suits are very easy to carry off and flatter the form. Why not also consider more interesting fabrics such as a subtle pin stripe or Prince of Wales check.

Breasts - A single breasted suit is definitely viewed as the more acceptable version for those who don't tend to hang out on yachts. So go for a
tailored single breasted suit to avoid looking like you've raided Pavarotti's grave.

Vents - The option of a single or double vent suit is often overlooked, although both look good, a double vent is more sympathetic to those with less than athletic builds.

Get the fit - Always get the suit altered to fit you perfectly, the shop may offer this service or find a local tailor to do it. The trouser should come down to touch the very top of the heel of your shoe when stood up. As for the jacket, this depends on your shape...trust the tailor.

Complete the Look

Ensure you don't splash out on getting the perfect suit and then let it down with a crap shirt and tie combo and don't be afraid to show some personality with flashes of colour. Finish it off with the perfect platform. Choose your shoes wisely and according to occasion. A smart patent works well for parties, while a Base London brogue or moccasin works for a social gathering.
